ARA is aware there has been growing concern about measles and the possible need for vaccination or revaccination.
Most adults have long-lasting protective immunity and do not need to worry. Please check your vaccination records for 1 or 2 doses of the measles vaccine (likely received during childhood as part of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine). One dose of MMR is sufficient for most adults. Two doses may be needed for certain adults such as healthcare personnel, international travelers, and students in post-high school educational institutions where there could be a higher risk of transmission.
Adults born before 1957 were most likely infected with measles naturally and do not need the measles vaccination due to presumptive, enduring immunity.
A small percentage of adults (< 5%) who received the less effective killed measles vaccine from 1963-1967 should get at least 1 dose of the live, attenuated MMR vaccine. Please discuss with your provider before proceeding.
If you are unsure of your measles immunity status, you should contact your primary care provider to check this.
